Recently, I visited The Swallow’s Nest in Washington, MO, a cafe, boutique, and event space. The coffee is roasted in-house, they have a variety of teas available, and breakfast and lunch items are served. The spot is women-owned and housed in a renovated historic home in downtown Washington. A second location is in the works for Marthasville, Missouri, at Dutzow Landing, as well as a traveling Airstream trailer to serve coffee on the go.
Initial Reaction

As this is a more local spot for me, I’ve passed The Swallow’s Nest often before coming inside. The exterior is so welcoming that it has always drawn my eye anytime I’ve driven or walked by. It’s in a restored 19th-century home with a beautiful brick exterior, lampposts, wrought iron railings, and landscaping that catches your eye. It doesn’t immediately scream cafe and boutique, but once you find out that’s what it is, it makes you want to step inside even more.
Inside, it immediately feels “boutique” rather than a coffee shop, as that is what you see first, with the cafe seating located toward the back, out of view. You can tell the boutique is very curated and draws you in to look around. I’ve even tried to get them to carry my soaps before, to no success! Even more disappointing now that I’ve gotten to linger in the shop more.

Coffee Order
In the Swallow’s Nest, you order at a counter in the middle of the shop and take a number to your seat. I had both my food and my coffee brought over to my comfy spot on a couch!

Test Drink: Hazelnut Cold Brew With Cold Foam
For my go-to iced drink to test how it holds up to other coffees, I grabbed my hazelnut cold brew with cold foam. I typically get sugar-free, but I didn’t see sugar-free syrups listed as an option. As a result, it felt sweeter than I was used to, but it was still delicious. I’d also like to note that I drank this after my signature drink, so the cold brew vs. espresso in the latte may be why it seemed sweeter than the previous drink.
Still, you can tell the Swallow’s Nest uses quality coffee as a base, and the cold foam was a lovely consistency and flavor to top it off.

Signature Drink: Iced Honeybun Latte
As a signature drink, I ordered the Honeybun Latte advertised on the board upon entry and opted for the standard whole milk. I expected it to lean heavily toward dessert, but it struck a surprisingly nice balance. The honey flavors added sweetness without masking the espresso, so I still tasted coffee with each sip instead of a syrupy treat. The cold foam was thicker than in other coffee shops, but still smooth and creamy—a highlight in an iced drink.
If you enjoy flavored lattes that still taste like coffee, this is an easy recommendation.
I’d drink both drinks again and love that the coffee flavor still took center stage.
Bites

Lunch Item: BLT and Chips
I ordered the BLT from the lunch menu with a side of chips. The sandwich was served on sourdough bread, and the chips were Miss Vickie’s kettle chips. The sandwich was generously filled with thick-cut, salty bacon and was the perfect portion for a satisfying lunch. However, it didn’t skimp on the mayo, so if you prefer a little less, I’d order it light.
Pretty Rounded Snapshot
☕Coffee Quality: The coffee had a great flavor and held its own against added syrups and milk or foam. This is often just what I’m looking for in a good coffee, because even though I want a fun drink sometimes, I always hope you can still taste the delicious coffee in there. Swallow’s Nest didn’t disappoint on this front.
🕯️Cozy Factor: Swallow’s Nest has a homey feel that’s hard to manufacture. The decor didn’t feel super curated or staged for a picture-perfect look. It reminded me more of spending time in a welcoming living room or a gathering with mismatched seating and a few cozy corners.
💻Work-Friendly: There was a steady buzz of conversation while I was there, with several tables full of people chatting away. I probably wouldn’t choose it if you are someone who needs complete silence to work. The seating is also more cafe-style than a working coffee shop, but if you are comfortable working in higher noise levels, the couch or a few chairs scattered about could be a good spot.

🛋️Linger Level: With the boutique and cafe combination, the Swallow’s Nest is great for lingering. The setting encourages you to spend time shopping before settling in with a coffee or food item. It feels like you’re meant to linger rather than grab and go. I enjoyed my food and coffee with a book on one of the couches. There’s also an outdoor seating area for nicer days, which would be another great spot to hang out and sip your coffee!
✨Atmosphere: Inside, it felt lively and social, with most of the people sitting and chatting at their tables. It felt like joining in on a family gathering with the decor and overall vibe. Of course, I’ve always been the one tucked away with a book!
💰Price: Swallow’s Nest is comparably priced to other independent coffee shops in the area. I felt everything was worth it in size and quality, as well as the overall experience of shopping the boutique while enjoying the cafe.

This is the Perfect Coffee Shop For…
Catching up with a friend or two or three.
A girl’s day stop.
Hunting for a special gift.
A solo outing.
Someone who likes fun coffee that still tastes like coffee.
Would I Go Back?
Yes! I can definitely see myself returning. I’d love to check out their breakfast items on a future visit.
